How to Use LanguaTalk
Here’s how I used LanguaTalk to have real-time conversations with AI to learn Spanish:
- Sign Up for LanguaTalk
- View Conversation Settings
- Begin an AI Conversation
- Translate the AI Response
- View Corrections & Explanations
- View Optional Responses
- Save Words & Access Flashcards
- Choose a Flashcard Exercise
- Strengthen Vocabulary with Flashcards
- Begin an AI Conversation with Saved Words
- Use the Other Resources
Step 1: Sign Up for LanguaTalk
I started by going to languatalk.com and selecting “Sign Up” at the top right. During the sign-up process, I was asked which language I wanted to learn, which was Spanish.
After signing up, I was welcomed by the LanguaTalk dashboard! The interface was really clean and simple.
Step 2: View Conversation Settings
Before starting a conversation with the AI, I wanted to highlight the conversation settings. I could access these settings by selecting “Change conversation settings.”
This opened a new window where I could choose my mode (listen only, listen and read, or text only). I could also choose my AI character, turn on “Auto-record” and “Auto-send” for hands-free chatting, etc.
Step 3: Begin an AI Conversation
In the middle were some topics on which to begin a conversation with AI. Here were my options:
- Do a role play
- Chat about my interests/life
- Have a debate
- Chat about anything
- Vocab & games
- Grammar practice
I selected “Do a role play,” which presented different role play options:
- Travel
- Living in a new country
- Work and business
- Social and family life
- Custom
I selected “Travel.”
Next, I was presented with more role play options revolving around travel:
- Checking into a hotel
- Ordering in a restaurant
- Buying a train ticket
- Asking a local for directions
- Renting a car
- Asking for local recommendations
- Checking in at the airport
- Booking a city tour
- Talking to the police, reporting having been robbed
I selected “Checking into a hotel.”
Immediately, a conversation with Santiago began! I could type a response in the empty field or record a response by enabling microphone access.
I highly recommend responding verbally with a microphone to improve your pronunciation skills. Once you’ve enabled your microphone, hit the “Record” button, say your response, and send it. If you are stuck, you can also respond in your native language.
Step 4: Translate the AI Response
Selecting the translate button under the speech bubble revealed the entire sentence translated into my native language.
If I didn’t want to translate the entire sentence, I could select each word to see its translation, meaning, usage examples, and similar words.
Selecting the “+” button added it to my vocabulary so I could refer to it anytime. The buttons beneath the speech bubble also allowed me to listen to what was said again or at a normal speed or slower pace.
Step 5: View Corrections & Explanations
I selected the pencil icon underneath my response to see corrections and explanations. Selecting the wand under my response showed how I could have responded differently to build my vocabulary.
Step 6: View Optional Responses
If I wasn’t sure what to reply with, I selected the lightbulb icon at the bottom. This gave me two options for responding: I could listen to the responses, practice saying them, or translate them. From there, I could send one of the responses by selecting it.
Step 7: Save Words & Access Flashcards
During this conversation, I saved a couple of unfamiliar words by selecting them and hitting the “+” button. I could then practice these words with flashcards.
I selected “Build my vocab” in the left panel to access my flashcards and practice these words.
Step 8: Choose a Flashcard Exercise
Next, I selected “Choose an exercise.”
I was presented with three options with varying difficulty levels:
- Recall: View each word or sentence and try to remember its meaning.
- Listen: Hear each word or sentence instead (more challenging).
- Produce: See the vocabulary in your native language and attempt to translate it.
I selected “Recall.”
Step 9: Strengthen Vocabulary with Flashcards
LanguaTalk started giving me flashcards. I listened to the pronunciation, made my guess, and revealed the answer by selecting the eyeballs.
Selecting the eyeballs revealed the translation. I could tell LanguaTalk whether I knew it or not and view usage examples and similar words.
Step 10: Begin an AI Conversation with Saved Words
While the flashcards are useful, LanguaTalk also allows you to have conversations with the AI, in which you can have conversations that intelligently use the words you’ve saved to reinforce them.
I went to the “Communicate” tab to access this feature and selected “Vocab & Games.”
Next, I selected “Practice my vocab (blend into chat).”
From there, I could choose whether to practice vocab next due for review, random selection, or my recently saved vocab. I selected “My recently saved vocab.”
A new conversation began with the AI, focusing on the words I recently added to my vocabulary.
Step 11: Use the Other Resources
LanguaTalk offers lots of other fun and effective resources for continuing to learn a new language. I could listen to podcasts, watch videos, learn new vocabulary through AI-generated stories, or find a tutor to practice with an expert in real time! The videos and podcasts have transcripts that highlight words as they are spoken to enhance comprehension.
Overall, LanguaTalk is an effective and interactive way to practice Spanish through real-time conversations, whether that’s with AI or a human tutor. I appreciated the clean interface, diverse role-play options, and personalized flashcard exercises to strengthen my vocabulary!
Top 3 LanguaTalk Alternatives
Here are the bestLanguaTalk alternatives I’ve tried and recommend you consider.
italki
The first LanguaTalk alternative I recommend is Italki. Italki stands out with its massive range of language options and community features that help you practice with other learners!
LanguaTalk and italki offer personalized one-on-one lessons with native-speaking tutors and flexible scheduling to accommodate any lifestyle. However, LanguaTalk is more selective in its tutor vetting process, accepting less than 10% of tutor applications. This suggests a focus on quality over quantity.
While LanguaTalk has higher-quality tutors, italki has an edge over LanguaTalk in the number of languages you can learn. With italki, you can choose from over 150 languages, while LanguaTalk is limited to just 16.
LanguaTalk’s key differentiator is its AI-powered conversation practice. It provides instant feedback in a judgment-free environment, whereas italki offers community-based language exchanges and group classes.
If you want more language options with a strong community and group classes, choose italki. For highly vetted tutors and innovative AI practice tools, LanguaTalk is the best choice!
Babbel
The next LanguaTalk alternative I’d recommend is Babbel. I love Babbel’s interface. It offers a clear learning structure with expert-designed lessons and speech recognition.
Babbel offers structured lessons focusing on vocabulary and grammar, with interactive exercises and speech recognition to help improve pronunciation. It also offers live online classes with native speakers, similar to LanguaTalk’s one-on-one tutor sessions.
However, neither platform offers a huge library of languages to learn. Babbel only supports 14 languages, while LanguaTalk provides only 16.
Babbel’s language lessons are more structured and self-paced, which is ideal for busy learners. In contrast, LanguaTalk emphasizes flexibility and conversational practice with vetted tutors.
One key difference is that Babbel has a mobile app and lifetime plans, while LanguaTalk doesn’t have an app and only offers monthly and annual subscriptions.
Regardless, both platforms are great for practicing languages through interaction. However, Babbel’s content can feel repetitive, and LanguaTalk’s AI feedback is sometimes inaccurate.
If you’re looking for well-structured lessons with comprehensive reviews, Babbel is for you. For personalized sessions with vetted tutors and flexible scheduling, LanguaTalk is an excellent choice!
Read my Babbel review or try Babbel!
Pronounce
The final LanguaTalk alternative I’d recommend is Pronounce. What I love about Pronounce is its instant, actionable feedback to improve English fluency. It also comes with personalized AI coaching and tracking tools for pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
One of Pronounce’s biggest strengths is providing a private, judgment-free environment in which to practice speaking English. I also liked that the accents and speeds were customizable to help me adapt to different speaking styles. Meanwhile, LanguaTalk is great for one-on-one, personalized tutoring, and AI-powered conversations.
Both platforms are great for anyone wanting to improve their speaking fluency. However, Pronounce focuses exclusively on English learners, which is very limiting. LanguaTalk offers 16 languages to learn, with a flexible schedule and vetted tutors.
Pronounce is an excellent tool for daily communication practice. Meanwhile, LanguaTalk integrates AI-driven conversations for personalized language learning with human-like interactions.
If you want to boost your English fluency with personalized feedback, choose Pronounce. For a multilingual learning experience with flexible scheduling, choose LanguaTalk.

LanguaTalk Review: The Right Tool For You?
LanguaTalk offers a unique and personalized approach to language learning, unlike any other language-learning app I’ve tried.
From the start, the interface was clean and easy to navigate. Interacting with the AI characters was personalized and engaging, making it an excellent tool for speaking practice and real-world interaction.
However, its language options are somewhat limited, there’s no mobile app, and the AI is occasionally inaccurate. Regardless, LanguaTalk worked well for me, especially with its flexible scheduling and focus on improving my conversational skills.
If you’re curious about the best LanguaTalk alternatives, here are the ones I’ve tried that I’d recommend:
- italki: Best for people who want a large selection of languages, community features, and group classes.
- Babbel: Best for structured, self-paced lessons focusing on vocabulary and grammar.
- Pronounce AI: Best for real-time pronunciation, tone, and fluency feedback.
